Why subscribe?

You probably don't want to. But anyway...

The whole idea of a "newsletter-style" publication is to have subscribers who are interested enough to read your thoughts on a regular basis. But for that to make sense, you should probably have a theme, and a topic where you have some depth of expertise and a unique perspective on things. My friend Eryk Salvaggio's Cybernetic Forest is a good example - there's no need to only have one area of interest or expertise (and to be honest, his work lies at the intersection of two fields) but to build a brand as a public intellectual, you need to be able to keep on topic.

I'm not going to keep on topic. I did that from June 2007 to July 2008, writing about ecology, evolution, intelligent design, and politics at Further Thoughts. I managed to post 75 times in February 2008 (and that doesn't count the posts I made at other sites). And then it stopped. I suppose adhd hyperfocus can keep you on track for a while, but eventually you start feeling a sense of obligation to produce quality work (because people are saying nice things about you) and executive dysfunction starts to win out.

Should I write about everything instead? Is it more sustainable if I use this just to satisfy my urge to write? I wish I could tell you.
